CRAZY HORSE, 2013 Aerosol and stencil on metal car door with orange cone 36 by 48 inches PROVENANCE NYC Residency "Better Out Than In Series" As part of Banksy's 2013 New York City residency “Better Out Than In,” a two vehicle installation was mounted in the Lower East Side near the corner of Ludlow & Stanton. The exhibition title of Banksy’s month long take over was a nod to the 19 th Century Impressionist painter Paul Cezanne’s quote “All pictures painted inside, in the studio, will never be as good as those outside.” Installed on October 9, Crazy Horse 18 is a two vehicle installation, using black and white aerosol, where horses can be seen dawning night-vision goggles charging into battle aside an abandoned car. This car door was part of a black sedan which lay in the foreground of a larger white truck and features a desperate looking individual whose face displays a mixture of fear, sadness, and anger. The installation was accompanied by a military audio clip of "Crazyhorse 18," a US helicopter unit. The clip was dubbed Collateral Murder when released by Wikileaks in 2010. Viewers listening to the recording experienced mounting anxiety caused by the repeated sound of gunfire coupled with American voices joking about the killing of civilian men, women, and children in Iraq.
