1960 woven copper wire 9 w x 56 h in (23 x 142 cm)
Ruth Asawa studied at Black Mountain College under Josef Albers where she experimented with a range of materials. Wire became her material of choice as she explored its qualities and capabilities: "If I feel that I can do it in plastic or in sheet metal, then I'm not interested in repeating it...none of these you could do really any other way." Asawa conceives of her sculptures as three-dimensional drawings: "I was interested in...the economy of a line, making something in space, enclosing it without blocking it out. It’s still transparent. I realized that if I was going to make these forms, which interlock and interweave, it can only be done with a line because a line can go anywhere."
