Chinese, 19th century. Pair of two complementary hand carved wood lohans (follower of the eightfold path) or Buddhist arhats depicted with thick curled facial hair, exposed ribs, knee bent and foot resting on staff supported by hand and holding docile creatures in opposite hand standing at full length and riding on stylized ocean waves on the back of a turtle (common imagery from Ming & Qing period depictions of immortal lohans). Unmarked. One measures 18.25" high, 5" wide, 4.6" deep. The other 18.5" high, 5.6" wide, 4.7" deep.
