Schmidt trained at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in the early 1950s and subsequently taught there. His sculpture was chosen for the seminal exhibition entitled "Sixteen Americans" at the Museum of Modern Art in 1959. This show brought to light several young talents who would later become 20th Century masters including Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and Frank Stella. His work can be found in numerous public collections including the Nelson Gallery in Kansas City and the Art Institute of Chicago.
