Ateliers Jean Prouve France, 1950 oak, enameled steel, aluminum 13¾ w x 34½ h in (35 x 88 cm)
This exceptional stool encapsulates the language and aesthetic of Prouve's designs.
His mastery of structural design is clearly illustrated in the folded metal base which stands in contrast to the carved wood seat it supports. An aluminum ring footrest shows Prouve's ability to utilize material that is best suited to the constraints of the design. Prouve stated, "a constructive idea is above all about understanding a comprehensive ensemble." It is the ensemble of otherwise disparate materials that are masterfully combined in this stool, creating a functional piece a furniture that speaks equally to art as to design.
