1962 brass coated steel 35 w x 21 d in (89 x 53 cm)
Bertoia's ouevre is typified by several distinctive forms including trees, bushes, sprays, rods and cloud forms. The cloud forms were utilized by Bertoia for several large-scale collaborative architectural commissions in the late 1950s and 1960s, namely Skidmore, Owings and Merrill's Hanover Bank and Trust in New York, and Minoru Yamasaki's Northwestern National Life Insurance building in Minneapolis. Bertoia pursued sculptural forms that created volume without the use of surface planes, resulting in a sculpture that absorbs and reflects light in a unique manner. The ephemeral and delicate shape is juxtaposed with the permenance and weight of the metal from which the sculpture is made. Presented here is a rare "Cloud" that is unique for its scale and compositon. The sculpture is composed of Bronze coated steel rods, bundled together and connected to each other in opposing directions. A fine example of Bertoia's work.
