Evans Products USA, 1945 walnut plywood, rubber 22 w x 23 d x 25½ h in (56 x 58 x 65 cm)
In the earliest working models of the molded plywood chairs, Eames strived to acheive a fused bond between the rubber shockmount and the plywood seat and spine.
The intended design lent a seamless quality to this important connection. Ultimately the joint failed to be durable enough and a screw and metal washer mount were added to strengthen the connection to the spine. The exposed metal hardware became an important aesthetic change to the final production version of this famous chair. This prototype illustrates the earliest version of the shockmount, free of hardware. more
