Ateliers Jean Prouve France, 1952 wood, mahogany, enameled aluminum, bent and enameled steel 139 w x 20 d x 62½ h in (353 x 51 x 159 cm)
The result of a collaboration between three moguls of modern art and design, the Tunesia bookcase personifies the level of experimentation, artistry and innovation prevalent in the modern period.
Largely designed by Charlotte Perriand, the bookcase features four levels of shelving segmented by bent compartments which double as the structural system. Three doors rendered in Diamond Point aluminum with mahogany pulls are the invention of Jean Prouve, who utilized this light and strong material in several of his cabinet designs. Sonia Delaunay created the color scheme for the cabinet which can be manipulated by hiding or revealing the black and white compartments behind the primary colored doors. Two ovoid legs are positioned asymmetrically under the stack of shelves, allowing for the distinctive cantilever of the platform. From the initial series of forty, this example is in fine original condition.
