USA, 1955 American black walnut, iron, 22k gold leaf 49 w x 1½ d x 84 h in (124 x 4 x 213 cm)
This commission for the Crosby family, in Yardley, Pennsylvania, was one of the first commissions during the Evans and Powell's partnership.
Powells style of construction is unique. As an artist working in wood, he strove to transcend the conventions of traditional woodworking. In 1951 he began offering his work in a showroom that was eventually shared by metalworker and artist Paul Evans. The showroom offered a lose collection of designs which fitted their unique aesthetic. The two artists collaborated until 1966, when Powell chose to a more solitary existence, working alone in his studio on commissions. Today he still produces several works a year at the age of 86. more
