Edward Wormley's commitment to and creation of an American modern aesthetic is his legacy.
His first two chairs for Dunbar, both recreations of antique designs, were released in 1932 and he continued to design a new line of furniture each year through 1967. Highly influenced by both historical and contemporary design, Wormley's mid-century American furniture expressed a distinctly modern vernacular while referencing the past.
This slide archive features illustrations of important furniture, interior and architectural designs, a selection of blueprints, and pictures of Wormley's own designs. Included are slides of classic chair designs, various paintings and sculptures, and images of designs by Frank Lloyd Wright, Tommi Parzinger, Paul Laszlo, T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings, Russel Wright, the Organic Design Show, Alvar Aalto, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Finn Juhl, and Hans Wegner. The collection totals 2,163 slides.
Collection includes stereo, 35 mm, glass-mounted and other medium format transparencies. Many photographs were taken by Edward Van Altena.
