USA, 1978 brushed stainless steel, lead 78 w x 114 h in (198 x 290 cm)
This example of George Rickey’s work displays his interest in the kinetic relationship between nature and materials.
Rickey was one of the first American artists experimenting with kinetic art and began making mobiles and moving sculptures. In the 1940s Rickey found his most articulate visual vocabulary in simple geometric shapes and thin stainless steel blades that abstract, echo, and animate natural forms. The appendages respond to the slightest air movement, showing simultaneously the vulnerability and strength of the material, but most importantly revealing the invisible flow of air around the sculpture. With no mechanical components, the tapered lines of "One Up One Down, Eccentric with Acute Angle, Variation III" gently move in response to their surrounding conditions. Incised signature to base. more
