In the early 1940s Jens Risom was commissioned by Hans Knoll to design a line of furniture.
Risom's line of seating initially used a curved one-piece seatback but due to wartime restrictions on materials Risom adapted his design replacing the one-piece seat with upholstery. Earliest examples used surplus parachute straps in place of leather or fabric. Largely popular, this early design was produced by Knoll for many years, and some designs were reintroduced in 1994. Of Risom’s series, Knoll touted, “Flexibility, economy and comfort are the keynotes to this new line of furniture."
