Continental School, 19th century. Four panel folding screen hand painted with idyllic fictitious landscape (possibly pertaining to the River Thames) scene that depicts a multitude of small figures (predominately grouped together) in a range of activities in an expansive outdoor setting with a tall stone and blue roofed institutional complex on the left (likely a court) with a U-shaped water canal surrounding a small wooded island connected to the substantial architectural construction at left by bridges. Numerous boats of different sizes and types float in the water, some close by the shore with people on board. The right side of the screen with a long horizontal wall with a arched metal gate. Painted image on four panel screen emphasizes the scale of the imaginative and breathtaking landscape and the fantastic activity within as the 18th century dressed figures are relatively small and clustered together to further accentuate the community and activity therein. Apparently unsigned. The painted image was likely one full painting originally. Each panel with fabric back. Each oil on canvas panel measures approximately 83 inches x 24 inches. Provenance: From the Estate of Mr. Thomas V. and Mrs. Marie B. Patton, Atlanta, Georgia.
