Finland, 1938 birch, upholstery 24 w x 20 d x 31¼ h in (61 x 51 x 79 cm)
Alvar Aalto was commissioned to create the Finnish pavilion for the 1938 World's Fair in New York.
This revolutionary design integrated a dynamic cantilevered and undulating wall made from molded plywood and wood slats. The project is considered one of Aalto's most innovative designs, and stands as an excellent example of innovative display. The four rare chairs presented here were utilized in the Finnish pavilion at the New York World's Fair. Each chair is constructed of both birch plywood and hand-finished solid birch. Each seat bears a label from the Fair.
