Arneson created a series of sculpture, ceramics and two-dimensional pieces based on Jackson Pollock. This body of work ranges from the tongue-in-cheek to revery for Pollock, but all the work reflects Pollock's influence on Arneson. The large scale and choice of material in this portrait head by Arneson turns Pollock into a mythical figure. The scale and physical presence of the sculpture, in conjunction with the uncanny likeness to Pollock serve to further notions of artist as hero. Strikingly, however, this solitary head sits on the ground unadorned, giving Pollock the appearance of being buried up to his neck, possibly as a metaphor for Pollock's life with alcohol, women, and the art world. more
