Ateliers Jean Prouve France, 1954 birch, enameled steel 26½ w x 20 d x 34 h in (67 x 51 x 86 cm)
The Antony chair illustrates Prouve's background in structural engineering, and his interest in new materials.
Created for the residences at the University of Strasbourg, the chair is an example of his drive to achieve results through an economy of means. The single piece of molded plywood floats on four points at the ends of two crescent-shaped steel supports. These are connected to a central tube from which the four splayed legs originate. A rare and exceptional example of French modernism.
