Designed in 1954, the Tokyo bench first appeared in 1955 in Perriand's exhibition Synthesis of the Arts in Tokyo.
Perriand organized the exhibit to showcase European artists and designers; the show featured her own designs alongside works by Le Corbusier and Fernand Léger among others.
