Betty and her husband, Vernon Samuels, were good friends of Olga and Rufino Tamayo and collected many of Tamayo's works. This lot is accompanied by a handwritten note from Betty Esman describing the occasion when Tamayo created the "Cabeza" woodcut while visiting her. The lot also includes a second unsigned example of this image. The pencil drawing was also created when Tamayo was visiting her New York studio and apartment. The cutout was sent by Tamayo to friends as a Christmas card. The Betty and Vernon Samuels Papers are now held by the Smithsonian.
