American (New Brunswick, New Jersey), circa 1800. Fine Federal eagle-inlaid and figured mahogany wood tall case clock, attributed to Matthew Egerton Jr. (active circa. 1785–1837). Hood of clock with molded swan's neck crest ending in brass metal caps decorated with thistles surmounted by three brass ball and steeple form finials. Tympanum inlaid with oval medallions with leaf motif. Arched glazed hinged door below opening to white painted dial with seconds register and date mechanism. Upper portion hand painted with hot air balloon. Waisted case with shaped hinged door inlaid with eagle, shield and stars. Clock case raised on splayed bracket feet. Height 97.5", width 18.25", depth 9". Provenance: James H. Stephens, Cloister, New Jersey to John H. Stephens to James H. Stephens III, to Marion Stephens, Cloister, New Jersey to John S.
