Nathaniel Leander Berry oil on canvas "Autumn Morning on the Hill"; signed "NL Berry" to bottom left corner; measures approximately 8-1/2" x 11-1/2" with wooden frame and has a sight image of approximately 5-1/2" x 8-1/4". Nathaniel Leander Berry (American, 1859-1929) was active/lived in Massachusetts. He is known for landscape, marine, genre. From Lynn, Massachusetts, he was supervisor and teacher for seven years, 1886-1893, at the local art school and was part of a group of seven "Lynn Beach Painters" that included Charles Woodbury and Edward Burrill. His studio was in Lee Hall in the City Square of Lynn. He later became supervisor of art in Newton, Massachusetts. He worked in the shoe and leather industry and saved his money from that endeavor to get art training which included lessons from William Burpee and classes at the Cowles School of Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and the Boston Art Club where he became a regular exhibitor from the 1880s through 1910. A "Plein-Air" painter, his subjects were marine including beaches, dories, and fishing scenes.
