"Monk Reading in Library" Antique Bookends Rare original pair of antique polychromed, electro-formed bronze bookends featuring a monk reading in a library; this set was made by Galvano Bronze Co. Circa 1920; each measures approximately 6-1/2" tall, 4-3/4" wide, and 2-3/4" deep and weigh 2 lbs. 8 oz. (5 lbs. for the pair); they are in very good original antique condition; the polychrome paint is still mostly intact and glossy and there are no breaks, repairs, or, touch-ups; the felt is peeling off to the bottom of one. These antique bookends were made using the much coveted and highly collectible bronze-clad method of production which utilized electricity via an electrode built into the plaster mold of the subject piece. There was a lot of preparation work involved. Bronze was then electro-formed onto the plaster mold. This was extremely innovative in the early 1900s. Unfortunately, it was also very costly for labor and materials. Some bookends could take as long as three days to be completed. Almost all of the companies went bankrupt.
