Oil on canvas laid down on Masonite painting depicting various figural vignettes illustrating the struggle and strife of the French Revolution including the death of Marat (imagery appropriated from Jacques Louis David) at right. Figures at center surrounding the young woman in a blue dress could be alluding to Victor Hugo's novel Les Miserables and may possibly illustrate Cossette at center with Marius Pontmercy, Jean Valjean and Javert. French Revolutionary male figures depicted wearing the red Phrygian cap to show their allegiance to the revolutionary cause. Figures in an interior tavern setting with a dog at bottom left, figures lifting rush seat chairs in background, swords raised, and a knocked over chair at front right to show the aggression and intensity of the scene. Apparently unsigned. Framed 24.5 inches x 31.25 inches. Unframed approximately 19.5 inches x 25 inches.
