Kiu Kavousi abstract mixed media "Allegro No. 2" in hand-carved frame; depicts two raised panels painted to center in predominately primary colors, against a brownish purple background to left panel, and against a blackish blue background to right panel; signed and dated "09" to bottom right corner; signed, titled, and dated "2009" to back with an Avant Garde Art Gallery business card attached; hand-carved frame features floral and foliate gilded accents to corners; measures approximately 37-1/4" x 25-1/4" with frame and has a sight image of approximately 35-3/4" x 23-1/2".Working with thinned and layered acrylics, Kiu Kavousi makes all-over paintings whose subtle shifts of color suggest fields of wildflowers or mountain slopes. Often, and more realistically, he renders boats beached on sandy shores, framed by large expanses of blue above. Writing of his childhood in northern Iran, the artist describes how the Alborz Mountains divide the country “like a giant fabric curtain.” Perhaps that image is the inspiration for Kavousi's paintings on cardboard, folded horizontally to resemble a slatted blind, or on paper that is vertically and irregularly rumpled.
