ABRAHAM LINCOLN AUTOGRAPHED LETTER; On Executive Mansion letterhead, dated September 23, 1864, requests the transcript of the trial of Capt. George A. Bennett for review by the Judge Advocate General; 4 7/8" x 7 7/8"; Note: Capt. George A. Bennett was the commanding officer of the Ohio Union Light Guard, organized by Governor Tod to serve as the bodyguard for President Lincoln. Captain Bennett was court-martialed under General Court Martial Orders no. 275 for "misappplying forage belonging to the United States", "misapplying provisions belonging to the United States", "knowingly making a false return" and "conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline". Captain Bennett was found guilty of nearly all counts and sentenced "to be dismissed from the service of the United States and to forfeit all pay and allowances now due or that may become due him"
