19th century. likely English. Large, tapered and streamlined ivory newspaper knife or paper knife of long rectangular form with rounded edges to accurately cut unbound sheets of paper for reading. Engraved and darkened with monogramming on exterior, verso with Latin inscription "VIRTUE ET VERITAS VINCUNI" (Power and Research). Length 18.5", width 1.5".
