YORUBA IBEJI TWIN FIGURE, NIGERIA Finely carved female idol with deep facial scarification, elaborate coiffure, and accented with several bands of clay beads, early to mid-20th c. Traditionally carved after the death of a twin, these were meant to house the spirit of the deceased, and ritually fed for the remaining lifetime of its owner. The Yoruba have the highest twin birth rate in the world, leading to the creating of a twin cult. (Provenance: Private collection, New York).
