JOE COLOMBO / FLEXFORM (Italy) Tube chair of arcipiuma plastic with coated foam upholstery, steel and rubber clips, 1969. 24" x 44" x 24" Comprising four plastic cylinders upholstered in soft vinyl-covered polyurethane foam, the Tube chair was one of the most innovative seating solutions of the 20th century. Created by the celebrated industrial designer Joe Colombo it epitomized the new spirit of design freedom emanating from Italy during the late 1960s and 1970s. The different sized seatng tubes could be joined together in a number of configurations, which gave the design an inherent functional flexibility, while also offering a degree of playful user interaction. Importantly, the upholstered tubes could also be placed inside each other for easy transportation, which enabled the chair to be literally bought off the shelf.
