German, first half 20th century (circa 1919). Villeroy & Bach Mettlach half liter bier stein with light blue and white decoration with Bacchanlian head on top surrounded with diamond motif border on hinged lid above five peasant figures drinking wine, carrying grapes, wheat and other items. Male bearded figure nearest handle with dog. Marked on bottom with Mercury mark stamped in green with the head of Mercury with a winged cap, two caducei or snake-entwined staffs, a banner or placard with the name "VILLEROY & BOCH", and a fancy semicircular banner bearing the factory name. Also marked on bottom "171. II 19". Height 6.1 inches, diameter of bottom 3.3 inches.
