Kalanag (Helmut Schreiber). Archive of Kalanag memorabilia. Ten pieces, including postcards, a Kalanag cigar band, “boomerang” optical illusion, business card, and advertising ticket for his ill-fated run at the Riviera Theater in Detroit in 1957. Sizes vary. 1940s – 60s. Condition generally very good. Though Kalanag was quite successful in his tours of Europe, he only appeared in three theaters in North America. Anti-German (and Nazi) sentiment was high at the time of his 1957 Detroit run, and coupled with a general disinterest in live shows at the dawn of the television era, this was enough to do in the massive and costly stage-filling spectacle, despite the magician’s best efforts to drum up business.
