The Great Lester (Harry Lester). Inscribed and signed lobby photo of The Great Lester. New York, Apollo Studio, ca. 1920. Handsome full-length image of the “grandfather of modern-day ventriloquism” and his dummy, Frank Byron, Jr. 10 ½ x 13 ½”. Some chipping and wear at edges; good. Inscribed and signed, “As archeologists need the Keystone do magic needs [sic] the Goldstone [sic]. Lester/June 30 – 21.” Perhaps the greatest ventriloquist of the vaudeville era, Lester later became a prolific teacher of the art. Among his many pupils was another famous voice-thrower, Edgar Bergen. This picture is likely inscribed and signed to the well-known magic book publisher, author, dealer, and performer Will Goldston.
