Born in Switzerland as Charles Adrien Wettach, Grock became not only the most famous clown in Europe, but was, for a time, the highest paid entertainer in Europe. In addition to being the “king of clowns,” he was a composer and musician who could play some 24 instruments. He established a music publishing business and went on to own his own circus. In the 1950s, he retired a wealthy man to an imposing 50-room villa on the Italian Riviera.
