Downs, T. Nelson. T. Nelson Downs’ Handkerchief Gimmick. Ca. 1920. A modified sixth-finger gimmick used – and possibly made – by the great coin manipulator to produce two small silk handkerchiefs from apparently bare hands. Celluloid and cloth, 4” long. Accompanied by a lengthy letter of provenance from Faucett Ross. Shows considerable wear from use, but intact. Ross’s letter states, “…I am mailing you a gimmick used for many years by the late T. Nelson Downs and which I inherited shortly after his demise in 1938. This was used to produce two silk hankies as a prelude to the patriotic production of a dozen U.S. Flags.”
