Civil War Era Eagle Roulette Wheel “No. 1 to 28 + Eagle, 0 and 00.” American, ca. 1860. Wooden bowl with hand painted numbers and eagle rests on three turned wooden feet. Top of brass spindle features the French style cross handle with recessed pocket to hold the ball. All frets present. Minor paint loss to eagle. The wheel does not spin freely. 22” diameter, 4” tall (not including spindle). Rare. The first mention of the American Eagle Wheel can be found in J.H. Green’s An Exposure of the Arts and Miseries of Gambling (1843). Research indicates there are only three other wheels of this type known.
