Brass & Cloth Cold Deck Holdout Machine: “The Giant”. American [?], ca. 1895. Brass belt-like device with cloth bag and mechanical carraige device used to switch stacked or “cold” decks in to play. The sharp wears the device around his waist and places the stacked (cold) deck in the brass carraige. At the the “moment of truth,” perhaps by spreading his knees, the pulley-driven brass carraige rises, positioning the deck near his waiting hand, which drops the deck in play into the black cloth bag that has opened to receive it. The cold deck is then removed from the carraige and brought in to play. One of the finest and scarcest deck-switching machines extant. Excellent.
