Napoletane (Naples) Pattern Pack of Playing Cards. Maker Unknown, ca. 1880. 39/40 (Lacking 6 of Coins), VG (scrapbook remnants on versos). In the latter half of the 19th century, card smuggling was quite prevalent in the south of Italy to avoid paying the tax on a pack of cards. The lack of a tax stamp on the Ace of Coins, and its red & yellow coloration leads us to the conclusion that this is a pack which was smuggled.
