Early 20th century archival ephemera relating mostly to the American Red Cross career of Gay Bolling Shepperson; includes several post cards from her travels, as well as photographs, foreign currency, and various ephemera items; also includes a scrapbook album that measures approximately 10-1/2" x 13-1/2"; items are in Fair overall condition with age appropriate wear. Born August 14, 1887 to John Shepperson and Mary Agnes Burton Shepperson in Virginia, Gay Bolling Shepperson was descended from the very earliest families of Virginia, the Bollings, and was distantly related to Edith Bolling Galt Wilson. She received training in Washington D.C. in the field of social work and taught school for six years before working for the U.S. War Department as a field representation for the American Red Cross in Europe after WWI. After returning, she headed the Virginia State Department of Welfare, children's bureau, from 1923-1928. After moving to Georgia she was administrator for three successive federal relief projects: The Civil Works Administration (CWA), the Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA) and the Works Progress Administration, renamed The Work Projects Administration (WPA) in 1937. Shepperson was the only female to serve as a state administrator for the WPA during the New Deal.
