De Moivre, A [Abraham]. The Doctrine of Chances. London: Printed for the Author, by H. Woodfall, 1738. Modern quarter leather with marbled paper sides, gilt title panel on raised spine. Illustrated with tables, decorative engravings at beginning or end of some chapters, one having yellowed surrounding leaves; repaired short gutter tear on title page, scattered light spotting and marginalia, else good. Jessel 382. In this, the second edition, the author hoped to dispel the notions of those readers who “are prepossessed with an Opinion, that the Doctrine of Chances has a Tendency to promote Play. (For) it is rather a Guard against it, by setting in a clear light, the Advantages and Disadvantages of those Games wherein Chance is concerned.”
