Lewis Palmer Skidmore (American, 1877-1955), "Venetian Scene with Gondolas in Water", oil on wood board. Signed upper left. Framed 9.25" x 12.75". Unframed 5.8" x 9.125". Note: Skidmore is most well known for his drawings of the sinking and rescue of the survivors of the Titanic which were widely reproduced in numerous publications. The artist was aboard the rescuing vessel, The Carpathia, with his wife en route to Rome, Italy. Interestingly, Skidmore later went on to serve as Director of the High Museum of Art from 1929-1948.
