Chinese, probably from the Zhejiang Province, circa 1900s. A lacquered and brass mounted dowry or wedding chest having pierced carved superstructure with brass banding mounted to each end and surmounted with four carved foo dogs, superstructure accommodates a pole to carry trunk during wedding procession. Top is mounted at all four corners with pierced brass banding. The front door has four pierced carved figural panels and large rectangular incised floral panel and folds down to reveal open compartment. The sides mounted with carved cloud scrolls and bail carrying handles. All raised on a molded base further banded in pierced brass. Approximate height 40", width 38.5", depth 28.75".
