American, 19th century. Scrimshaw whale tooth with flattened bottom and open top leading to hollowed interior, exterior with inverted engraving - one side with text "NEVER GIVE UP" on ribbon surrounding crossed cannons (possibly in reference to military naval service) and smoke clouds recalling war, opposite side with monogram "LP". Overall approximate height 3.2", width 2.6", depth 1.75". Provenance: acquired by the Estate of Dr. Woody Cobbs and Mrs. Honor Cobbs, Atlanta, Georgia from Colin Strong Antiques, Naples, Florida, in a private sale on April 8, 2004.
