German or American, late 18th/early 19th century. A polychrome decorated pine blanket, dowry chest or trunk having a rectangular form with twin paneled cover or lid with hand forged iron strap hinges, the front decorated with foliate motifs between applied turned pilasters in alternating blue and red ground, above raised and recessed panels, the end panel inscribed in German 'ANNO', the middle panel with initials 'J.C.K.', the sides mounted with wrought iron bail handles, the interior with till or candle box to upper side and inscribed inside the lid indistinctively. Raised on four turned feet. Approximate height 24", width 47", depth 22.5".
