English, late 16th century. Pair of Renaissance hand carved oak wood relief figural carvings, later joined together at center, likely part of a larger architectural program. Carving depicting two standing woolly satyrs with curled hair, exposed chests and lower half in the form of a goat with cloven feet. amid scrolled foliates, each Dionysian (Bacchanalian) figure playing the flute with puffed cheeks. Overall measures approximately 18.5" x 8.2". Provenance: William H. Stokes, Early Oak Furniture, Roberts House, Siddington, Cirencester, Glouscestershire whereby acquired by the Estate of Dr. Woody and Mrs. Honor Cobbs, Atlanta, Georgia in June 1990.
