American School, likely early 19th century. "Winter Logging Scene at Twilight", oil on canvas, apparently unsigned. Figural nocturnal landscape painting depicting lumberjacks with horse-drawn logging sled on icy logging road under full moon at twilight. Framed approximately: 19.25" x 23.75". Unframed approximately 15.5" x 20.5". Provenance: Property of the Estate of Dr. Woody Cobbs and Mrs. Honor Cobbs, Atlanta, Georgia. Note: During the first half of the nineteenth century lumbering was a weather dependent (and seasonally oriented) enterprise. Lumbering was done during the winter when timber could be transported on large sleds.
