Lucia and Arthur Mathews Furniture Shop (American (San Francisco, California), c. 1906-c.1920s). A large carved and painted wood painting frame with squared molding, each of the four sides bearing an inner raised band of carved repeating cyma curve scrolls extending outward from central scrolls with similar embellishments to each molding end, allover with copper to bronze lustrous painted finish. Affixed with blank rectangular brass plaque to lower center interior edge. Verso with paper label ""M. H. De Young Memorial Museum, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco / William Keith / 26652, Shepherd and his Flock, Evening Scene / Gift - Mrs. Henrietta Zeile, 1907". Approximate outer dimensions of frame 41.25" x 51.25". Approximate interior dimensions of frame 30" x 40". Note: a well known artist and craftsman himself, Arthur and his wife Lucia Mathews opened their Furniture Shop in San Francisco after the great earthquake of 1906 creating chests, boxes, frames, and other wooden furniture and accessories. The bulk of frames designed and created were made specifically for Mathews' own works, however the artist William Keith (American, 1838-1911) was one of a select few that the shop also created frames for. The frame included in this lot bears a paper label from the De Young Museum in San Francisco stating that this frame once held a painting by Keith which was donated to the museum by Mrs. Henrietta Ziele - Ziele's son John was a partner at the Mathews Furniture Shop.
