English, possibly Lancashire, circa 1650. A 17th century stained oak wainscot armchair having a shaped scroll carved cresting over a demi-lune flower head and a row of arcaded niches, the back with arched panel centering an interlaced quatrefoil knot and open downswept carved arms on turned supports flanking a later trapezoidal plant seat and raised on front block and turned legs linked by foot stretchers. Approximate height 43.4", width 24.75" (seat), seat depth 14", seat height 17.25". Provenance: Property from the Estate of Dr. Woody Cobbs & Mrs. Honor Cobbs, Atlanta, Georgia.
