British, 19th century. A rectangular carved oak wood heraldic plaque depicting the shield form coat of arms of the Hughes clan at center, three crowned lion's masks in profile surrounding a second smaller and raised shield bearing a further crest, with carved lettering at top "Insi // gnia" flanking a crowned lion's head in profile amid oak leaves and acorns, also with carved lettering to right of shield "Thomae Hughes" and in fragment to left of shield "Ca ???? ensis", to a ribbon swag below shield "Y Gwir Yn Erbyn Y Byd (The Truth Against The World)" over "MDC" and "CXC", possibly for the year 1790.
