English, circa second half 18th century. A flattened cow horn powder horn of wide arching shape tapering to a narrow end, the wide end plugged with a section of wood and the narrow end affixed with a metal nozzle. The horn with incised decoration to one side of the Royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom bearing the inscription "Honi soit qui mal y pense (Shame on whomsoever would think badly of it)", which is the motto of the chivalric Order of the Garter, an ancient order of knighthood of which the Queen is sovereign; the alternate body side engraved "P. M. HOOSIC / HIS HORN: 1778". Approximate length 8", height 3.75", depth 1.75". Provenance: From the Estate of Dr. Woody Cobbs and Mrs. Honor Cobbs, Atlanta, Georgia.
