West African (Cameroon), 19th century or earlier. A ceremonial cast bronze pipe from the Benin or Bamum peoples of tall curving form with elephant effigy at base with round ears over curving tusks and almond shaped eyes set under a cylindrical bowl with two bands of geometric decoration in relief, the shaft of the pipe formed of reticulated or pierced African Buffalo masks between two bands of horizontal fluting. Pipe to a later presentation stand. Approximate height of pipe 22", width 2.125", depth 5.75".Provenance: From the Estate of Dr. Woody Cobbs and Mrs. Honor Cobbs, Atlanta, Georgia.
