Indian, late 18th/ early 19th century. A massive carved teak ceremonial wedding chest of sarcophagus form, the rectangular body raised on four block feet and bearing serpentine lid with segment at center being a hinged lid that opens to reveal a single interior compartment lined in cedar, with a hidden compartment to right end accessed by a sliding top, the whole banded with iron strapwork and at front decorated with bands of large iron rivets, with bands of serpentine relief carving to front at frieze and base. Approximate height 35", width 56.25", depth 27".
