Flemish, 18th century. Large oak carved high back settle in the 17th Renaissance style having a elaborately carved paneled back, the upper panel centered with profile portrait of Hermes flanked by winged griffins and stylized scrolling rinceau with dolphins above 9 relief carved panels with portrait medallions and foliage alternating with stylized foliage and centered with portrait mask of a lion all supported by balustrade niches and flanked to each side by pilasters; one end headed with projecting bust of Hercules wearing the Nemean lion over a caryatid and the other end with projecting Athena bust over a caryatid, both pilasters also carved with fluting and issuing arms carved with snarling lion heads with paw feet supports enclosing the hinged seat opening to storage, the front paneled carved with stylized floral alternating with linen fold.
